I’m frustrated

When can we expect a fix for blurry underwater video?

The HD Hero is blurry when used underwater. This has been known by GoPro for over a year and there is still no fix. When does GoPro plan to fix this by?

Please get this problem fixed. All I want to do is spend $500-$600 on your product ! My life would be complete after this modification !

  • Other companies are developing the flat lens...I am hopeful GoPro will have a product soon but in the meantime I may try this product.

  • Ya, I can do that sort of fix on my own if I want to put epoxy all over my nice housing and hope that no moisture got inside so it doesn't fog. Plus lens replacement basically means whole housing replacement and redoing the lens fix. I did try one fix on my own that sort of worked but still mid way through my trip it fogged up and I missed out on a lot of good footage.

Even others have come up with modified lenses, but there goes your warranty if you use them and they are all only good for 1080P without a black ring around the whole image. I still want to be able to use 720P as well as pictures (which also use the same wide angle 720P does that get the black ring). All existing solutions are "get by" solutions until the real one comes out since none of them are ideal.

2 new backpack addons have come out now - which is great as I want both - but what shouldn't have been a problem in the first place should have been fixed before they went on to more new products in my opinion. Hopefully now that the LCD and extended battery are out they will focus on a fix (which really shouldn't be too hard or take too long) before they come out with something else new like the 3D GoPro system.

    • When I asked about selling a waterproof camera that can't be used underwater, the GoPro support basically said they didn't claim it to be an 'underwater camera'.

So my waterproof camera that cost over $600 (with accessories) can't be used underwater. That's a special kind of 'customer service'. A good (non underwater) camera it is, but I will be shopping elsewhere when it comes time to replace it. I won't give this company any more of my hard earned dollars.
    • Second this!
Poor Show from them...the cam should come with a warning...beware of crap quality underwater shots. Bought my cam ONLY for using underwater.

I found a 6MM lens on Ebay for $50, but you have to dismantle your camera, heat the lens to break the glue, twist it out, twist the new lens in and put the camera & buttons back together. This would probably void your warranty, so it seems like a lot of work and a lot of risk to a $300 camera. Please offer the 1080 camera with a standard/flat 6mm lens!

Does anyone have a link to video, or multiple links to videos of this "known" problem?

I wish I would of found this prior to purchasing the camera today, this was going to be my secondary use for the camera, and I just found out that the mount that was suppose to be released in December is still not out. This particular mount was going to be used in conjunction with my primary use of the camera.

I bought this camera based on the countless reviews from such places as "Gizmodo", which I am a long time follower of. Ultimately my bad for not doing more research.

It is a real shame that GoPro is not taking an active part in this community and offering up some answers. It is really counter-productive, and it doesn't bode well for customer service or faith in the product.

I would much rather have an honest answer than no answer at all.

The more I read it sounds like "GoPro" is not meeting or even attempting to address a wide range of serious problems surrounding its hardware and software. Some of these issues are over a year old!

I suggest for those of you that have had no luck receiving answers or have been plagued with constant problems to make reports to the BBB. This will motivate the company to take these problems seriously, and it will also let consumers know what kind of product and company they are dealing with.

    • I think the real complaint here is that GoPro is not very active with their customer service or resolutions. I think the customer base would be happy if GoPro addressed the problem, and offered a solution. If a 3rd party vendor can offer up a solution then it should be a reasonable expectation that the original manufacturer is able to offer a more elegant solution at a competitive and affordable price. If they cant offer a viable solution then why not at least endorse and help the 3rd party vendor.

And just for the record I dont expect my hammer to be a screwdriver, but I also dont expect manufacturers to advertise a swiss army knife when all there selling is a regular old knife.
    • Show me a company that is active with their customer base...they are few and far between. I don't want to come off like a GoPro fanboy...I returned two cameras because of dead pixels. From complaint to having a new cam in my hands was about 2 weeks. Not bad.
Eyeofmine is an authorized dealer...they have the solution for a price I'm sure will be comparable to whatever GoPro eventually comes up with.
I've been doing uw video since 1982 (last century!) and the GoPro HD is by far the most amazing piece of gear I have ever seen. Until you shoot with a mailbox size housed camera tethered to the surface with a very expensive 15 wire cable to a tape deck on a boat you have no idea how far we have come.

  • Every optically correct underwater housing for ANY camera on the market today is roughly $200-$2000. I am completely happy with the quality of imagery the HD HERO produces underwater with my FREE waterproof housing.

I'm not seeing anywhere on their site that they market an underwater camera... everything I see says waterproof. Glad to know I can take it surfing and not have to worry.
    • That is a valid point. I thought I saw somewhere officially the camera being marketed for underwater use, but can't seem to find it at them moment. One thing about the really expensive UW housings though is that they need tons of buttons or methods to control the really nice cameras with all those buttons. That increases the cost a lot. With only 2 buttons the HD hero has it isn't as bad. Another important thing to note is that GoPro has had this on their site for almost a year now:

"Please note that due to the curved lens of the waterproof housing for the HD HERO camera and standard def Wide HERO cameras, you will notice a slight loss of sharpness with underwater images. We are developing a flat glass adapter / housing specifically for underwater use, thus allowing for the same image sharpness that you enjoy with your GoPro camera above water."

They fully intend for the camera to be used underwater, just havn't gotten around to it yet since they have been developing new things as I have mentioned. I just wish they would spend a little time to come out with a fixed housing before they move on to more and more new products.
    • Well MJ, I'm glad that you're glad that you know you can take your HD HERO surfing and not have to worry... although it seems that they advertise its use for surfing, so I'm not sure why you might be "worried," in the first place.
If it weren't for people like me there would be no push for a company to innovate, find solutions, extend product lines, develop accessories and so on. You see MJ, if you never ask for more then you are sure to never get more. If all HD HERO users were like you, the only business aspect that would grow would be the revenue generated by the replacing of mounting pieces and "FREE" waterproof housings that you will undoubtedly loose.
Because of me, and people like me, Go Pro has found a cheap solution that will allow the camera to record undistorted-HD footage underwater. Thanks for demonstrating the complacency typical of most surfers.

  • personally I am going to spring for the Sartek housing when I need a truly underwater housing.
    Only $100 and it's rated to 180'.

    Sartek Quote

HD HERO HOUSING modified by Sartek for underwater use. The original HD port had a magnification property to it that caused underwater images to be out of focus. This magnification reduced the field of view by about 10% to about 110 degrees in 1080P mode. The Sartek modification replaces the original port with a undistorted borosilica window and returns the 1080P field of view to 127 degrees (on the surface and of course underwater objects appear closer). There is some vignetting at lower resolutions, as the camera can see a full 170 degrees, with our modification (this can be cropped through software). This mod has been tested to 240'+ We warranty it to the orginal 180' GOPRO specification. Every housing is wet depth tested to 220' prior to shipping.
    • Remember though that it is only good for 1080P video. If you try another mode or want to take pictures there will be a black ring around it. A lot of the time I want video, but a lot of the time I want pictures since they come out a lot nicer than screen caps from video.
    • yeah but you should be able to remove the vignetting in post production with a little bit of magnification with no detriment to image quality.

My D5000 with ikelite housing vignettes and I paid $800 for it so i think i'll be happy with a $100 housing that does the same.

If gopro comes out with something before it warms up that would be great but until then I have to settle for whats on the market.

  • I’m undecided
Here's a lens that is available that fixes the problem, but with some vignettes in lower resolutions. Still gonna wait to see if GoPro comes out with a better solution, if not I'll get one of these.

The flat lens is a drop in replacement for the original GoPro housing curved lens. It has a depth rating of up to 180ft, the same as the Gopro housing. The lens is made of Polycarbonate resin, an amorphous thermoplastic material noted for its outstanding impact strength, superior dimensional stability, glass-like transparency, excellent thermal resistance, and low-temperature toughness.

  • Snake River Prototyping is offering the BlurFix(TM) adapter for your GoPro HD camera. The BlurFix allows you to adapt a wide variety of 55 mm filters to your camera. The included low profile UV filter is depth tested to 130ft and has no vignetting in 480p, 720p, and 1080p modes. Also available, is a custom low profile red filter by URPro that produces the same vignetting results with the added benefit of color correction. Because camera filters are made of glass, the optical clarity is superior to plastic lenses. The filters are removable for no vignetting in all modes (r1-r5). The system performs identically to the standard GoPro HD camera because the stock OEM fish-eye lens remains in place. Blurfix is CNC machined out of aluminum and anodized black. Its black finish and stepped chamfer on the inside surface give you the best optical performance (similar to all high-end camera lens.) Also included with the system are desiccant balls that are installed in a lollipop groove immediately behind the filter so that fogging is never an issue even if you are assembling the unit in a humid environment.

You can buy the BlurFix adapter (with included filter, sealant, and desiccant balls) and assemble the unit yourself or SRP can ship you a fully assembled and pressure tested housing with the filter of your choosing. Visit the following link for purchase options:

  • I’m Angry
As a new GoPro Hero2 owner who bought it specifically for its underwater housing I am DEEPLY disappointed that it doesn't focus underwater. I had wondered why there where no scuba videos on the site: now I know why. I simply cannot understand why a company would market a camera that by default comes in a case waterproof enough to be excellent for diving and yet the camera is useless below the waves. This is the kind of dumb move that gets companies sued in class actions. Having accepted that I bought a flawed product I am further astonished that while there are at least 4 companies making flat lenses for GoPro housings, GoPro isn't one of them! Had I realized any of this a month ago I would have bought a *real* underwater camera instead of shelling out an equivalent to make this one work. Lesson learned, never again.

  • Got one of the following cameras with housing at my local thrift store for 7 bucks. tested it for leaks, and then added some foam to hold the gopro center of the flat lens. It works perfectly. A bit bigger than a gopro case, but for 7 bucks, it'll do until gopro releases their solution. I even put fresh batteries in the camera and gave it to my son to play with. It looks like it is rated to 165' so that will work for me.

I actually went to the store to get one I saw there a few weeks ago, for a Sony camcorder. It was gone, but this one showed up, and it worked much better than the other one would have.

I bought a Gopro Hero 2 thinking that being advertized for 60 m under water is a true quality for filming. I went diving and the image is blurred. I was so pissed. Since the mofos at Gopro did not say a word of warning about that, I would call this a scam. Don't buy Gopro!!!!!

  • Seriously? You had no clue that the stock lens didn't work well under water? I bought my GoPro probably a year ago and any simple search on the Internet informed me that I'd need to change to a flat lens... which I purchased at the same time and changed in minutes. What did your really expect from a $200 video camera and housing?
    • It's not a professional product and it's announced to be one. This what do you expect comments are really stupid.
    • Yes. Misleading advertising. They said it is waterproof to 180 feet but they don't say it does not work under water ! That is misleading. They must have known this before. Anyone who works with imaging and lenses knows this would not work correctly. Now customers have to spend 50.00 more for a correct housing plus fedex shipping and after customs, taxes and brokerage fees it is over 100.00

  • BlurFix Flat Lens is not as good as I once thought it was. With the standard o-ring and standard UV filter it comes with, it leaks. I suspect the 0 ring is not being compressed correctly in the channel it sits in.

Two if us got it and both of us have had it flood between the housing and the screw on lens.

We are both divers and know how to apply lube to the o-ring and insure it seals correctly. If you can get it to work for you, great ! Having the option to screw on some real quality glass is a bonus for for us, it just does not seal well enough.
