  • First thing I'd try is go into settings and delete all / format the card. Should fix it.

  • delete all / format the card in the camera itself, with the camera's settings (NOT in the computer)

  • i had the same during my holidays a few days ago.
1st i had a 16gb card which worked fine. during holiday i bought a 32gb class 10 which was not recognized by the cam (no sd card). when i changed back also the 16gb card was not recognized anymore.
delete all / format with the camera did not work -> no sd card

now i am back from holiday lets see if i get it recognized again somehow.
    i'll keep you updated ...

  • I'm currently on hols and have been trying to download content from the 64GB card in my Hero3 Black to the laptop. This card has not been recognised at all and I have done 2 days worth of recording. I've tried various things including using the card straight from camera and using an adapter in a card reader, nothing works.

I also popped the card in my phone to see if that would read it, no joy again.

Now, when I put the card back in the Hero3, it does not see the card at all! I'm mightily unhappy about this as I don't want to either loose the content so far and if I can't use it for the rest of the hols it will have been a huge waste of effort and money!

    Any ideas?

  • Same exact story as matt so I'd love to hear the solution. Is it a sandisk issue or the gopro? Since it doesn't work in any other computer I have to assume that it's a sandisk issue but my questions is whether the gopro is causing it?

  • Same problem as the last 2 guys. One day I was taking pictures, everything was fine, then I turned the camera off and on again and it didn't see the SD card. I put it in my computer and formatted it and it worked again, but I lost everything that was on it. That camera had several other problems (taking pictures out of order, wifi wouldn't turn off and would kill the battery, date/time were off, and others), so I took it back and exchanged it.

Now I have a new one, and it just did the same thing with the SD card. Also same problem with the date/time stamp and wifi. Haven't tried the time lapse but probably has that same problem too. This is with the firmware update and a new SanDisk 64GB card. I don't know how to tell the specs on the card other than that. It just says SanDisk Ultra SD/SDHC/SDXC.

I'm pretty disappointed that 2 cameras in a row have all these problems.

  • I recently had the same problem with my GoPro Hero3 Black Edition. I was recording vacation videos on my SanDisk Ultra 64GB Micro SDXC. I've recorded a few on this card prior to this vacation without a problem. When I hooked up the GoPro to my computer to transfer the images, the GoPro locked up as it was connecting. I had to remove the battery from the GoPro and when it turned back on, the GoPro says "No SD". I've tried a few recovery software options, but nothing has worked. When I plug this card into my system, it says the card is not formatted. If I select the option to format it, it only sees 30.6MB out of the 64GB it should have.

OK guys, here is what has worked for me for my SanDisk Ultra 64GB Micro SDXC. Unfortunately, if you already have data on the card and a computer cannot even recognize the card, then you have bigger fish to fry. However, if you have a card that windows or mac can see, but the camera cannot, here is what worked for me.

    1. Plugged the card into my MAC and backed up the card data
    2. Used the disk utility in MAC to see that the card was somehow formatted to EXFAT. This makes no sense, because at one time the gopro could see it and should not have, but whatever.
    3. Used the Disk utility to format the card as plain old FAT (NOT FAT32)
    4. removed the battery from the Camera
5 Put the battery back in,
    6. Put the newly formatted FAT card into the camera

This has worked for me. However, on a few subsequent tries it again said could not see card. When that happens, I just pulled the battery and put it back in.

Here is one other thing I noticed that may help. I have the battery backpack, and when I try to charge the gopro with the battery backpack on, it only charges the battery backpack, so I end up with a fully charged back pack and 0 charged camera. When I try to boot a camera that has a fully charged battery backpack but a completely depleted battery in the camera, it tells me NO SD. I then take the backpack off, charge the camera by itself, and the camera now recognizes the SD>

Hope some of this helps - it has definitely been frustrating.

  • Well I called GoPro and they told me to 1) manually update the firmware again, and 2) get another card smaller than 64 gb. He said the SDXC format can throw off the camera and that's what the 64gb cards have. So I got a 16gb sandisk ultra (he said make sure to get ultra). I did the manual firmware update instead of the java one and it took a lot longer this way. Instructions are below per the email they sent me. So far most of the problems that the camera was having seem to be alleviated, minus the problem with the wifi not wanting to turn off. I will take the camera out tomorrow and see if it makes it through the day.

    Manual firmware update instructions:

Go to http://gopro.com/support/product-regi... and complete all of the steps on the first page except for Step 6. Be sure to reformat your SD card either in the camera or on your computer with a card reader. Then, click "Continue" without the camera connected to the computer. The firmware updater will let you download the firmware files to your computer after you enter the customer and camera information. It'll also give you instructions on how to manually complete the firmware update after you’ve downloaded the files to your computer. (You have to manually unzip the update files and place them in the root directory of the SD card, then put the card in the camera and power it on to update).

Hopefully this will solve the problem, I'll post an update.

  • I switched to a 16GB Sandisk Ultra card, no problems since. it sucks that the 64GB card that GoPro endorses does not actually work, but that's the fact of the matter.

  • I'm here for the same issue. My computer won't even see the card, the camera says NO SD. It sounds like I have to get a smaller SD card and there is no recovering my photos and videos?

  • I have also been having problems with the camera and the sandisk 64 gb card.

Constant problems with the camera freezing and now the camera does not recognize the card. We bought all of this equipment for a special trip to document the early family history of my wife's aging parents. It has ruined a very special trip and I wish I had never heard of GoPro. Tech support blames the problem on using the card connecting the camera to a Vista operating system. They advised me to update to service pack 1, but the computer is already running service pack 2.

  • I’m Mad
HELP!!! Just got for christmas. I having the same problem,,...says no card. WTH???? Please Can someone help me on this? Thanks
    • P.S. the video works but says no sd. He has a 32 gb card. Should we change it to 16gb?
    • I have just got a hero 3 silver and a Sandisk micro SD 64gb.

Have just spent a very frustrating few (many) hours dealing with the same issue, and for now I think (touch wood) it is resolved. I was getting the same no SD message, and some very disrupted functionality (freezing when scrolling through menu functions, etc.)

      I am no expert, but felt I should share what seems to have provided a solution for me;

It seems that if you delete the partition on the micro sd, the problem goes away. To do this, I downloaded a free program called MiniTool Partition Wizard. This lets you look at the storage on the micro sd in a lot more detail. From the menu you can erase the partition. At the same time I formatted the card to NFTS rather than FAT, exFAT, etc (which I know is not right). This then means that when you put the card in the gopro, you get an 'SD error' message rather than the dreaded 'no SD' message, which allows you to scroll to urge dustbin icon and reformat the card on the gopro itself.

Have only managed to test it very briefly, but seems to be ok...hope the same thing can be of some help to others.

  • I tried to convert the micro SD (ADATA 64 GB Class 10) both ways described above and it wouldn't work on my Hero2. Have an Ultra 64 in my Hero3. Took the Ultra out and put the ADATA in the Hero3 (formatted to NFTS) - the H3 didn't like the format, but it didn't say NO SD - so I went and formatted with the H3. This worked for me.

Put Ultra in H2 and it works fine - if I take the ADATA out of the working H3 - the H2 still won't read it...seems crazy, but I got a work around

  • Just had this very same issue on my Hero3...my PC just wanted to re-format the card. But, when I connected the camera to my ipad via wifi and the ipad app all the data was there.

I've either used this app or the camera to delete the files off 64gb card last time. I am wondering if that's the problem?

  • I have the same problem. I was using my Hero 3 to take a time lapse. 2 hrs into the process, the camera froze. When I finally got it to reboot, the SD card had an error (it was working fine before). I tried the steps above to reformat the card using the gopro at the expense of loosing 2 hrs of time lapse images. That didn't work. Now when I put the SD card into the computer, it only reads as having 30MB instead of 64GB. I know this is because the partitions are screwed up but I have tried every software out there to recover the partitions and none of them can salvage it. Most of the blogs I read say the SD card is unsalvageable at this point. Essentially, the GoPro burnt up my 64GB class 10 SD card. I am very unhappy with this product. It has been plagued with bugs ever since I got it.

There is also a problem with the battery which occasionally wiggles loose from the contacts and the camera just shuts down randomly.
