Hero3 Black, Battery BacPac and charging

Hi, have anyone noticed that while charging both Battery BacPac and the battery inside the camera, the camera doesn't charge?

I left mine charging for one day and the red led on the camera continues in. I disconnected the charger, removed the battery bacpac and noticed that the camera itself is not charged...

Any suggestions?

  • The Hero3 manual says somewhere that charging the camera won't charge the BacPac and vice versa. You need to charge them separately.

My problem is that my BacPac won't charge after being fully charged and fully depleted. Very strange indeed. It won't work when charging from the wall or the computer; at least the little LCD screen doesn't show anything, nor does the the red LED. When I attach the depleted BacPac to the Hero3 Black, the BacPac LCD flashes an empty battery graphic.

    • I want to charge them (Back Pack & Camera) at the same time because anything else is total balls! But alas i can't.

My Battery Back Pack manual says on Pp.9 " Pass-Through Charging = for hero3 a pass-through charge will flow to BOTH the Battery Back-pack battery and the hero3 battery when combined and connected to a power source (USB). Power will first charge the hero3 battery and then the battery back-pack."

My camera charges but the Back Pack won't when combined and connected to a power source (USB). i have to plug it into an individual power supply which is less simple. charging the two batteries at the same time is faster than one at a time however. opening the case is the biggest pain.

Okay I just managed to get past my little BacPac issue by doing this:

    Attach BacPac to GoPro Hero3
Turn on GoPro Hero3 (BacPac responds with empty graphic)
Attach charge cable to BacPac (it then responds with charging LED and LCD info)
Remove BacPac and continue to let it charge

So far so good... I'll update if it fails in any way.

  • I am also having the same problem! The manual definitely says that 'flow-through' charging is possible with the Hero 3 and the Battery BacPac V2. However, in my experience, if I charge my Hero 3 with the Battery BacPac attached, both of the devices will crash and neither will charge properly. Not sure if you guys have this issue as well.

Thanks Psynchr0 - I will try your steps to get the BacPac responding again.
    • i have had my gopro camera and battery bacpac for just a few days now and have had all the trouble that everyone writes about NO SD, SD ERR, and now the battery BacPac not charging all in this four (4) days i've owned the hardware.

It is frustrating that there is this much trouble to be had with brand new equipment. I've found out the hard way like many others while skiing that there is trouble with the hardware.

James G., I'm afraid to experiment to find out if I can flow-through charge these things. I will write back if some day I forget and do it by accident though!

I called GoPro on Friday morning this past week (Feb. 22, 2013) and they answered my call within a few minutes.. That's all I have to say nice about this whole "mess" that is GoPro.

  • Hi All. Can you confirm if you discovered how to make flow-through charging work? Please post updates to your messages.

In my experimentation with Hero3 Black Edition, it seems that flow-through does not work. After leaving the camera charging overnight, in the morning bacpak shows empty battery lcd.

(I am not going to get up in the middle of night to switch the USB cable from camera body to bacpak.)

    Thanks,

ilyea, I'd suggest using your second charge cable and charge the two separately. if you don't have two charging USB ports, go but a USB hub or a wall charge plug that accommodates two or more USB plugs. also if you have an iPhone, you can use some of its USB charging accessories. GoPro simply does not support pass-through charging.

  • PSYNCHR0, thanks for the confirmation on the lack of the obvious feature that should have been there but is not. I was hoping I missed something.

  • Just ran into this myself, I've just gotten the battery bacpac and was power cycling it.

After completely draining the camera (internal battery and bacpac) I plugged the camera into my laptop with the bacpac attached. Initially everything started charging fine. I then started copying files and after a few minutes I got a copy error and noticed that the camera was off.

I tried turning it back on with no luck. Even with the bacpac removed I still couldn't get the camera to charge by itself.

I got it to work by pulling and resetting the camera battery and the plugging the camera in to charge by itself, it took a second for the charging light to come on. I then plugged the bacpac in and was bummed to see no charge indicator. Luckily it came on a minute or so later.

My guess is that when the bacpac is completely drained it's causing some sort of problem with the camera.

  • I’m frustated
Yes, a similiar occurence I had. The bacpac was drained totally, but the internal battery was full. When I plugged the bacpac, I couldn't turn on the camera. When plugged out, the camera can be turned on. That raised a question, it seems the camera uses only bacpac when it is plugged in, instead of classic first external then internal procedure. If no power left in bacpac then the camera is dead. That makes external bacpac a fraud because it blocks internal battery use. Also these issues with pass through charging supports that. I wonder if any body can drain internal battery while bacpack plugged in. If so then I'm wrong (talking about hero 3 and v2 bacpack).

  • I have been having the same issue. I have found that both batteries do drain completely. But when I go to charge I have to disconnect the bacpac charge the main battery, once this is complete I have to remove the main battery then reinsert it and connect the bacpac then it charges. The bacpac will not even charge seperatly unless I follow these steps its very frustrating.

  • I performed detailed testing within past 2 weeks. Here are my findings:

Mode Internal % External % Minutes Size (GB) Notes
    720p@60fps+10 sec pic 100% 0% 78 N/A
    1080p@24fps 100% 100% 139 28.6 720 MB in LRV files
    1080p@24fps 100% 100% 136 28.5 Repeat of previous test - consistent!
    1080p@24fps 100% 0% 99 20.6
    1080p@24fps 100% 0% 99 20.7 Repeat of previous test - consistent!
    1080p@24fps 0% 100% 74 15.4
    1080p@24fps + wifi 100% 0% 81 17
    1080p@24fps + wifi 100% 0% 69 N/A Phone was connected (?)
    1080p@24fps 100% 0% 92 19.3 Smartee 1200 mAh battery (original battery is 1050 mAh)
    1080p@24fps 100% 0% 92 19.2 Repeat of previous test - consistent!

    All findings:
GoPro Hero3 Black Edition - purchased shortly after release date
Windows shows actual 29.3 GB with 32 GB SD Class 10 card
Updated to latest firmware on 5/15/2013. Startup screen shows V02.39
Stability seemed to improve after updade. In about 10 tests, only once I could not turn on the camera untill I took out the internal battery.
Video 1080p@24fps is broken down into 17 min 26 sec (~3.75 GB) segments
With both batteries at full charge and 1080p@24fps video:
    - I got about 136 min
    - 28.5 GB of video
    - 720 MB of LRV files
    - "Card full" before the battery ran out
    - 1 bar on battery indicator left (neck to neck)
Camera was able to charge both batteries through camera USB conneciton.
Camera was *uncertainly* able to chanrge both batteries through external batery's USB port. It was plugged into PC for almost 2 days, yet not all bars were full on battery level lcd. Tested this twice.
When connected through external battery USB port, camera was NOT visible by PC to download data (I wonder why external battery has so many connecitons in the camera plug?)

FINAL NOTE: For charging, with or without external battery connected, I need to remember to always chanrge it through camera's USB port in order for both batteries to charge fully.

Follow the steps below to repair the connection:
    1. Power on the camera
    2. Press and hold the LCD BacPac button
    3. Attach the BacPac to the camera while continuing to hold the button (do not release)
    4. After about 5-10 seconds you will have the LCD BacPac power back on.

Now the BacPac should be charging normally, and pass-through should work on the hero 3.

My bacpac has been acting weird lately too, when I connect the two, instead of having the double battery meter thing, it gives me the usual 1 meter with 3 segments, then the bacpac's meter keeps going from 1 to 2 to 3 repeatedly. wtf

  • Hey guys.

just got my battery bacpac for hero3 yesterday.
wanted to see how long the average time was for the bacpac to charge.
i have been charging it for over 12 hours now and it STILL isn't fully
charged yet. the icon on the back says its only halfway done.

    is this normal?

    thanks!

  • I noticed that when the backpac is full but the small internal battery is empty, the backpac shows charging from empty. Backpac when not charging shows full. Now, my issue is that when charging, the battery I think use to charge to full and then stop charging. I have noticed that as long as it is plugged in to the charger, it continues to charge for ever and ever! Any thoughts?

  • I had what I thought was a completely dead bacpac for my GoPro 3 black.. Using the direct method of connecting USB from a wall socket to the bacpac didn't do a thing. 12 hours of charging never awakened the display on the bacpac.

Then this morning I added the bacpac to the battery in the camera, connected the USB from my pc to the bacpac, turned on the camera, and *presto* the bacpac started charging. I let it charge for an hour then turned off the camera, disconnected the bacpac from the camera and plugged it back into the wall charger, and it was able to finish charging.

I have no idea why that worked but it did.

But I also discovered a better option for longevity than the bacpac for doing anything with the gopro that doesn't require the protection from the case. Buy an external external battery. I bought the Anker 15,000mah for about $45. It will recharge any cell phone or tablet many times over - critical if you're traveling via airplane or to places where there are no outlets. It will also power the GoPro for long periods, Right now I'm running a test timelapse with a shot every 2 seconds and have over 2.5 hrs - 4300+ shots, and the battery display on the GoPro app on my iphone is showing showing that the camera is in recharge mode because it's getting it's power from the Anker. I see no reason why it won't run for 10-12 hrs at this rate.

  • Update: It ran for 4.5 hrs then shut down after taking 8,214 photos.
The external battery pack was still strong but the GoPro battery was dead.
I'm not sure I understand why the External wasn't able to feed it longer.

  • I just did another test on my GP3 Black this morning, With wifi on and being monitored on an Iphone 5S, and an extra bacpak battery installed on the GP3, and an external Anker E5 15,000 mah power supply attached to the GP3, and a 64 GB Sandisk Ultra card inside, I set the GP3 to take photos every 2 seconds. After 7.5 hrs I had 13,549 photos (38.8 GB) on the memory card and the camera was still running. I figured that was long enough to do any timelapses I might ever want do with that camera so I stopped the test. I then aimed the GP3 at myself just before shutting it down. Then I put the card in my PC and took a look at the contents. All 13,000+ photos were there, including the last one I took of myself. -- and after that (just now) I installed the latest firmware. :-)
