When I set off for a bike ride I leave the Gopro to continuously record so I don't have any interruptions with the footage, but when I go on to the gopro editing software I discover the gopro has recorded videos for 17minutes and 25 seconds and the starts recording 5 seconds later interrupting my footage, and doesn't record continuously.
Does anybody have any idea why it dose it or is it a fault on the camera?

That's a Fat-32 file format thing. Basically, files are limited to under 4GB. You have all the footage though and, if you edit the clips back together, you'll find your videos didn't miss a frame between them. Look at the file names if you want to know the order they captured.
